Open MSc/BSc Thesis Projects
I actively supervise BSc and MSc thesis projects at the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics (DIAM), TU Delft. If you are eager to apply deep mathematical toolkits to solve real-world industrial or food-security problems, consider exploring one of our open tracks below.
๐ฏ Active Project Tracks
๐ Track A: Mathematical Modeling for CropXR Plant Resilience
- Level: MSc or advanced BSc
- Description: Work directly with large-scale genomic and phenotyping datasets generated within the CropXR Potato program. Develop or apply new statistical models and numerical algorithms to predict plant growth anomalies and optimal irrigation/fertilization profiles under changing environmental conditions.
๐พ Industrial Focus โ Crop Consult
Our industrial consortium partner, Crop Consult, has proposed specific data-driven modeling challenges for incoming thesis students:
๐ฅ Download Crop Consult Company Profile (PDF)
Research Question 1: Which environmental variables determine the time of setting and the size distribution of potato tubers?
๐ Download project description (PDF)Research Question 2: How accurate are fertilization advices?
๐ Download project descrition (PDF)Research Question 3: What and when to measure for real-time interventions?

๐ Track B: Mathematical Foundations of Scientific Machine Learning
- Level: MSc
- Description: Investigating fundamental questions such as when an ML model will make exact predictions or how to `bottleneckโ an AI to avoid overfitting and hallucinations.
๐๏ธ Track C: Inverse Problems & Computational Physics for Industry
- Level: MSc / BSc
- Description: Dive into wave propagation, inverse scattering, or imaging analytics models to design software prototypes for complex physical applications.
๐ค How to Apply
If a particular track aligns with your academic interests:
- Review my relevant publications and supervised MSc/BSc Theses on that topic.
- Send me an email at N.V.Budko@tudelft.nl with your CV, a brief motivation paragraph, and a current list of completed courses.
